The Albright College men's basketball team looks to return to the Commonwealth Conference championship game for the first time since 2010 and faces the team it beat in that final, as the Lions host Lycoming in a league semifinal contest.
Commonwealth Playoffs
Arcadia will face Alvernia on the other side of Reading tonight, after rallying to beat Stevenson in Monday's play-in game. The Knights stormed back from 11 points down at halftime to earn a first playoff victory since 2000 for their up-and-coming team.
Alvernia will host Saturday's championship game if they win, but a Crusader loss would mean tonight's Albright-Lycoming winner earns home-court advantage in the final. Arcadia is planning to bring two student buses as they look to battle against a tough Crusader home crowd.
Series History
Albright leads the season series 38-24, and is 22-8 at home. The Lions beat Lycoming 87-74 in Williamsport, Pa. to win the 2009-10 Commonwealth championship, behind 24 points from
Zac Schaeffer. However, Lycoming is 3-0 in Commonwealth semifinal games since 2008, including a road victory over Widener last season.
Previous Meeting
After a season of close calls, senior
Dave Singleton finally achieved a triple-double and the Albright College men's basketball team locked up second place in the Commonwealth Conference with a 90-87 win over Lycoming.
Singleton finished with 19 points, 13 rebounds and 12 assists on the night. He also eclipsed 900 career points late in the game (including his two seasons at Division I High Point University). Junior guard
Pedro Perez had a career-high 26 points on 11-of-14 shooting from the floor, adding seven rebounds. Junior
Kyle Jordan nearly challenged the triple-double mark as well, totaling 13 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists.
National assists leader
Jerald Williams had a double-double for Lycoming with 12 points and 10 helpers. Six Warriors were in double-figures, led by
Michael Rudy and
Anthony Martin (15 points each).
Triple-Double Performances
There have only been 12 triple-doubles in the nation for Division III this season but three have come in the Commonwealth Conference, and two from players in this game.
Singleton finally achieved the feat vs. Lycoming, after previously missing by one assist twice, and by two assists on another pair of occasions. Williams recorded one against Widener back in January, with 11 points, 11 rebounds and 11 assists.
Singleton has been named the Commonwealth Conference Player of the Week four times this season, and has also been named to D3hoops.com's national Team of the Week twice. Williams was D-III News' National Player of the Month, in November.
Albright College Lions (20-5, 13-5 Commonwealth)
The Lions are currently ranked #4 in the Mid-Atlantic Region, after getting as high as #2 in recent weeks.
Perez is second on the team in scoring, with 13.7 ppg. Jordan averages 10.8 points and 6.6 rebounds per contest, and has blocked a team-best 29 shots. Singleton's 58 steals are an Albright single season record, and he is currently 38 helpers short of the school assist mark.
Lycoming College Warriors (16-9, 10-8 Commonwealth)
The Warriors avoided any tricky playoff tie-breaking scenarios with a double-overtime, 97-95 win over Hood to close out the regular season.
Pat Dougher forced overtime with a three-pointer, and then Anthony Martin banked one in from long-range to save Lycoming in the first extra period. Martin ended with a career-high 35 points.
Martin leads the squad in scoring, with 17.3 ppg. Williams leads the nation with 10.0 apg and a 3.47 assist-to-turnover ration, and is third in steals (3.48 spg).
