The first-place Albright College Lions continue their quest for home-court advantage in the Commonwealth playoffs with a tricky road trip to Hood College tonight.
Previous Meeting
The Blazers gave Albright a real test in the Bollman Center, leading 57-55 in the final two minutes before Lion senior
Dave Singleton (1-for-12 at the time) took over.
Singleton pulled down a rebound and went coast-to-coast for a runner that tied things up with 1:40 left to play. Hood missed at the other end and Singleton drilled a step-back jumper with 45 seconds remaining that represented the winning points. He would also add two free throws in the final seconds to finish with 10 points on the day (along with nine rebounds, four assists and three steals).
Albright's other point guard
Sam Marrella had a good outing, totaling six points and seven assists. Juniors
Kyle Jordan (13 points, nine rebounds, three blocks) and
Pedro Perez (12 points) were in double-figures, and senior
Cornell Mickens added eight points on 3-of-5 shooting (including two huge three-point plays).
Albright College Lions (18-3, 11-3 Commonwealth)
The Lions remain just outside the top-25, as the sixth highest team receiving votes outside of the rankings. Singleton is averaging 15.4 ppg while ranking in the top-50 in the nation in assists (15th, 5.8 apg), double-doubles (21st, 10), rebounds (38th, 9.6 rpg) and steals (46th, 2.3 spg).
As a team, Albright (18-3, 85.7%) is one of 21 schools in the nation with an overall winning percentage higher than 85%. The Lions are scoring 75.2 points per contest, while holding opponents to 67.6 ppg.
Hood College Blazers (12-9, 6-8 Commonwealth)
Hood has won two straight road games, at Lebanon Valley and Widener, to remain alive in the Commonwealth playoff race. The Blazers currently sit two games back of the playoff places with four regular season games remaining.
Junior
Cameron Cook won Commonwealth Player of the Week honors after those two road victories, averaging 16.5 points, 6.5 rebounds and 1.5 steals. He is the first Hood player to win Commonwealth POW. Senior
Trey Quinn (8.2 ppg, 6.1 rpg) was also recognized this week, earning Capital One CoSIDA Academic All-District honors.
Senior Day on Saturday
This Saturday Albright hosts another Maryland team, Stevenson University, in the Lions' final regular season home game of the 2012-13 campaign. Departing players Singleton,
Cornell Mickens and
Zach Benjamin will be recognized on Senior Day.
Mickens and Benjamin enjoyed a Commonwealth championship and a trip to the NCAA tournament back in 2009-10, and are looking for a second league title this year. Singleton transferred in last year after stints at Division I High Point and Marquette.
The Lions are close to clinching at least one more home game for their senior class, as the top two Commonwealth teams will host conference semifinals on February 20.
MAC 100 All-Century Teams
Voting is now open for the MAC 100 All-Century winter teams, as the conference celebrates its centennial this year. Squads are being chosen for each era in conference history and an impressive list of Lion legends have been nominated. Albright men's basketball nominees include the school's all-time leading scorer
Tom Pearsall, New York Knicks draft pick
Bill Carey, and recent Commonwealth Players of the Year
Albert Medoro and
Zac Schaeffer. Vote online now at
