The Albright College softball team finally had its home opener, dropping a Commonwealth Conference doubleheader to Elizabethtown on Thursday.
The Lions lost the opener 8-1, despite 2-for-3 performances from
Natalie Carlucci and
Jackie Bohanan in the middle of the order.
Kaylee Werner opened the scoring with a three-run homer in the top of the first inning. The Blue Jays added another in the third and had the bases loaded with no out, but
Allie Frank struck out
Payton Marunich and got
Keli Krause to fly out, as the Blue Jays could tack on just one more.
Bohanan and
Nikki Schwenk had registered back-to-back singled in the bottom of the second, but Albright couldn't bring them in.
The Lions threatened again in the bottom of the fourth, loading the bases with no out.
Hillary Rodriguez walked, Carlucci singled, and Bohanan snuck a single to third. Schwenk knocked in Rodriguez on a batted out, but the Lions only managed one run in the stanza.
Albright challenged in the nightcap, but ultimately fell 5-3.
Kiersten Gilfoy was 2-for-3 with an RBI, while Carlucci was 2-for-2 and launched a solo home run.
In the bottom of the first, Gilfoy walked and was bunted along by
Shelby Snyder. Rodriguez followed that with a single, and Carlucci nearly went deep. Unfortunately her shot hit the top of the wall, and Gilfoy was gunned down at home.
Carlucci did clear the fence in the bottom of the fourth, with a deep homer down the left field line to make it 3-1 Elizabethtown.
Despite a two-run Lion rally in the bottom of the fourth, the Blue Jays scored once each in the fifth and sixth innings to never surrender the lead.
Albright falls to 3-15, 0-6 on the season, while Elizabethtown is now 10-8, 4-4.
