Despite an early lead and a late comeback, the Albright Lions Baseball team fell to Messiah College by a score of 11-9.
The Lions jumped out to a three-run lead in the top of the 2nd inning. Sophomores
Zac Okonski and
Gabe Santone drove in the first two runs with a pair of RBI singles. With the bases loaded senior
Tyler Meckley drew a walk to bring in Santone, making it 3-0 Albright.
In the bottom of the 4th, three singles and a fielder's choice helped Messiah cut the lead to 3-2 off sophomore pitcher
Jared Neiheiser.
After singles from
Dylan Boll and
Evan High,
Max Dundore laid down a sacrifice bunt advancing the runners into scoring position which led to a
Gabe Santone RBI single, making it 4-2 Lions in the top of the 6th inning.
The 4-2 Albright lead was quickly diminished in the bottom half of the inning as Neiheiser gave up a leadoff solo home run and issued a walk, ending his day. Pitcher
Seth Heffner came into relieve Neiheiser and allowed a pair of hits to give Messiah the lead, 5-4.
The Lions' deficit grew larger in the bottom of the 7th inning as freshman
Dylan Price gave up three runs on four hits, increasing Messiah's lead to 9-4.
Junior
Collin Hecker started the 8th inning with a leadoff double and later scored on a groundout to second base, cutting the Messiah lead to 9-5.
Once again, Messiah College answered back in the bottom half of the 8th- scoring two runs on two hits off of sophomore
Max Dundore to push their lead to six.
The Lions led a valiant charge in the 9th inning, scoring four runs and getting the tying run to the plate, however the Messiah lead proved too large to overcome as Albright fell by a score of 11-9.
Today's loss puts the Lions to 11-16 on the season, 3-12 in conference play. Albright's next game is Thursday at home against Valley Forge Christian College at 4:00 p.m.
