Box Score
Maddy Greth (kills),
Christa Mantz (serves) and
Kyrsten Stanford (blocks) were all dominant in different categories as the Albright College volleyball team swept Alvernia in the Bollman Center on Wednesday.
Albright won 3-0 (25-14, 25-15, 25-19) to earn its second sweep of the Crusaders this season, and the Lions' first Commonwealth Conference victory of the season. A previous victory at Alvernia on September 7 did not count toward the league standings.
Stanford, a junior, had seven total blocks, including four in the opening set, as the Lions' leader in that category had another great day at the net.
Mantz, a senior, ran off four consecutive service aces in the second game and finished with six total (zero errors).
Greth, a freshman, hit .320 with nine kills on the day. That included an impressive stretch of seven kills over Albright's final 13 points as the Lions went to her time after time to close out the contest.
Greth teamed with
Marisa Bartone for a block and then ended a long rally with a kill, as the Lions opened game one with a 9-5 lead.
Stanford had a solo block, and then teamed with
Brandy Blimline for another, as the Lions pulled away.
Jordan Gibson added an ace that stretched the gap to 22-10.
Alvernia led 10-7 in game two, forcing Albright to call timeout. Coming out of the break, Mantz led a 7-0 run with four straight service aces. She nearly had five, as her next attempt was dug back over the net and easily blocked down by Heath.
After an 8-1 Crusader run in the third and final set, Albright rallied again. Bartone tied the game at 11-11 with an ace, and two straight Greth kills put the Lions back on top. Greth then had three straight kills to make it 24-19 and bring Albright to match point.
Albright is 5-8, 1-2 on the season, but improves to 3-1 at home in 2013. Alvernia falls to 4-5, 0-3.
