The Albright College volleyball team earned a pair of victories Saturday across town, emphatically sweeping a tri-match with Penn State-Brandywine and host Alvernia University.
The Red and White held each team to single-digits once. The Lions beat Alvernia 3-0 (25-9, 25-12, 25-19), before dispatching Brandywine 3-1 (25-15, 25-9, 23-25, 25-15).
The victory over Alvernia will not count as a win in the Commonwealth Conference standings. The two Reading teams will meet on September 18 in the Bollman Center, which will count towards the league.
Against the Crusaders, senior
Christa Mantz had nine kills and 13 digs, while classmate
Morgan Heath added 29 assists and eight digs.
Freshman
Caitlin Klotzbach had a team-best 14 digs, while fellow rookie
Maddy Greth added seven kills (.357 hitting percentage) and 10 digs. Junior
Marisa Bartone (eight kills, 17 attempts) hit .412 for the game.
Heath served the first nine points of the match, as Albright took an 8-0 lead before the senior finally committed a service error.
Consecutive service aces from Klotzbach pushed Albright's game one lead to 19-6, and
Brandy Blimline closed it out with another ace.
The Lions also ran away with the second game, as
Kyrsten Stanford and Mantz combined for a block that made it 18-9. Albright would go on to take a 25-12 decision, and hold on in game three for the sweep.
Against Brandywine, Mantz had 18 kills and 11 digs and Heath totaled 38 assists with 11 digs. Greth had 13 kills, while Bartone blocked three balls. Klotzbach had 18 digs on the backline.
The Lions dominated the second set, with Greth leading an 8-0 run from the serve that gave Albright an 11-2 advantage. Bartone's kill and two straight Brandywine attack errors made it 18-3, and the Lions went on to grab their second 25-9 set decision in two matches.
Albright improves to 2-5 overall, and will have its home opener on Tuesday vs. Stevenson.
