Natalie Carlucci homer helped give the Lions victory in the nightcap, as the Albright College softball team split a doubleheader with Widener on Thursday.
In their home opener on the Albright Softball Field, the Lions won 5-4 following a 9-2 loss in the opener. Three of the Red and White's four Commonwealth Conference games have been by a 5-4 scoreline, following two such losses at Arcadia on Sunday.
Carlucci (2-for-4) had four RBIs in the second game, including a three-run home run in the bottom of the fourth to give the Lions the lead.
Jalene Garcia and
Shelby Snyder came around on the play.
Carlucci nearly went deep again in the sixth inning, ripping a double off the left field wall that scored Garcia and pushed the Lions' lead to 5-3.
Widener threatened in the seventh, scoring one run and loading the bases after an intentional walk to
Heather Forward. Lion pitcher
Katie Civitello got
Angela Hood to ground out back to the mound to end the rally.
Garcia was 1-for-2 and scored twice in the victory, while classmate
Amanda Toto went 2-for-2 at the plate. Civitello scattered five hits over seven innings to earn the win.
Both rookies recorded hits in game one, with Garcia going 1-for-4 and Toto (1-for-2) scoring once. Carlucci was 1-for-3.
Down 2-0,
Aubrey Koch,
Shelby Snyder and Garcia (on a bunt single) loaded the bases in the third inning. Civitello was hit by a pitch to score Koch and cut the deficit to one.
Widener opened the game up with three runs in the fifth and then two more in the top of the seventh.
Albright is 3-8, 1-3 on the season and travels to Lycoming on Saturday for an important Commonwealth doubleheader.
