Albright Faces Moravian in ECAC South Championship Semifinals

READING, Pa. – Although the Albright women's basketball team was disappointed to lose the Commonwealth Conference Tournament championship game to Stevenson and further disappointed when its name was not called as one of the squads selected to participate in the 64-team NCAA Tournament field, the Lions enter the weekend still playing basketball.

Albright will serve as the host of the ECAC South Championship beginning on Saturday (March 7) in the Bollman Center. The Lions, who are the top seed in the field, will face fourth-seeded Moravian at 2 p.m. on Saturday, while second-seeded Lebanon Valley will square off against No. 5 seed Washington & Jefferson at 4 p.m.

The two semifinal winners will meet on Sunday (March 8) at 2 p.m. to determine the ECAC South champion.

Albright enters the tournament with plenty on the line and plenty of motivating factors.

The Lions are currently 20-7 overall on the season, which ties the school record for wins in a season. A victory on Saturday would allow the Lions to break the school record and stand alone in school history.

Secondly, Albright has a chance to send its two seniors, Jessica Venturelli and Allison Hardwick, out on a winning note and with a championship. Venturelli has started every game she has played during her Albright career, while Hardwick has been a strong contributor off the bench this season.

And most importantly, the Lions have an opportunity to set the tone for the 2015-16 season. With Albright losing only Venturelli and Hardwick, Albright is poised for a breakout season next year. That tone will begin on Saturday against the Greyhounds.

Albright will have its hands full if it is to hoist an ECAC South Championship trophy on Sunday afternoon. The Lions will meet a familiar foe in Moravian on Saturday and a victory would mean a third meeting with Commonwealth rival Lebanon Valley or a meeting with a very talented Washington & Jefferson squad.

The Lions and Greyhounds met earlier this season in the Bollman Center and Albright emerged with a 75-71 overtime victory. Freshman Devan Horka came off the bench to score 18 points and grab 11 rebounds, while Emily O'Donnell and Venturelli each had 14 points. Freshman Jane Joyce had 10 points, six rebounds and four assists for the Lions.

Alexis Wright was dominant for Moravian as she had 23 points and 16 rebounds, while Alesha Marcks scored 12 points.

Albright split the season series with Lebanon Valley. The Lions posted a 75-73 victory in the Bollman Center when Kelecia Harris scored at the buzzer, and the Dutchmen topped Albright 70-60 in Annville, Pa.

Washington & Jefferson enters the tournament with the best overall record at 21-7 and advanced to the semifinals with an 86-61 victory over Waynesburg.

Lebanon Valley enters the weekend with a 19-9 overall record following its 71-52 quarterfinal victory over Delaware Valley, while Moravian improved to 15-11 on the season with a 64-59 overtime win over Marywood.
