Softball Beats FDU-Florham 7-5; Splits Doubleheader on Day Three of Fastpitch Dreams Classic

The Albright college softball team turned a successful trip to Myrtle Beach having already matched their season win total from last year in just six games played to start the season.

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Albright college softball team (3-3) played to a .500 record during their time in Myrtle Beach with wins over Franciscan, St. Joseph's of Long Island and winning today over FDU-Florham. For today's games, the Lions started their day with a 7-5 win over FDU-Florham and concluded the day with a 5-0 defeat to Scranton. The three wins to start the season have already matched the win total from all of last season.

Albright opened up the Fastpitch Dreams Classic in Myrtle Beach with a pair of wins over Franciscan and Saint Joseph's of Long Island on Monday (Mar. 11). The Lions mercy ruled both teams winning 9-1 over Franciscan (5 INN.) and 13-3 over Saint Joseph's of Long Island (6 INN.)
 
GAME 1: W, 7-5
A trio of Lions collected two hits in today's game against FDU-Florham, Marissa Rovenstine, Emma Breschard and Veronica Heckman all had two singles each. Heckman led with two RBIs while Rovenstine added one RBI for Albright.

After trailing by one after the first inning the Lions regained the lead plating two runs in the top of the second inning. Sadie Gonzalez and Heckman got the inning started with back to back singles. Heckman would come around to score on a wild pitch and Gonzalez scored on a Rovenstine single to right field.

The fourth inning belonged to Albright as the Lions scored four runs in the inning to increase their lead to 7-2. Albright sent nine batters to the plate in the inning. Heckman was responsible for two RBIs in the inning putting the ball in play seeing the FDU-Florham center fielder commit an error that allowed to Lions to score.

The Devils battled back to make it a 7-5 game with Albright in front after five innings of play. FDU-Florham was able to load the bases up in the bottom of the seventh with two outs. Kiera Reilly worked out of the jam getting the last out by way of popout to second base.

Reilly threw two scoreless innings in relief and earned the first save of her career in the process clinching the 7-5 victory for the Lions. Jadelyn Van Winkle started on the mound today and picked up win number one on the season.

Also recording singles this morning was Juliette Licata and Slaydon Fisher. Licata was on base twice more earning two walks while Fisher drew one walk.

Madison Lasko was on base three times all by earning a free pass via the walk. Lasko added a run scored helping Albright to victory.

As a team, Albright was constantly on the base paths recording nine hits and nine walks.
 
Game 2: L, 7-0

The Lions bats struggled two get going in game. Scranton's pitching staff did a good job of keeping Albright off balance throughout the game. Coming into the game, the Lions were averaging 9.2 runs per game. 

Juliette Licata collected two more hits this afternoon both of which were singles. Over the first six games to start the season, Licata has three multi hit games, three doubles and seven RBIs. Licata's average is sitting at .450 through six games. 

Slaydon Fisher and Heather Pomante each had recorded one single each for the Lions.

Fisher's had a great start to her Albright career collecting a hit in five of the first six games of the season.

Pomante continues to swing a hot bat collecting four hits in four games played at the Fastpitch Dreams Classic. 

 
Up Next:
Albright will return home for their MAC Commonwealth games of the season playing host to York College on Sunday, March 17. The Lions will face the Spartans at 1/3 p.m.
