Men’s Golf Takes Second at DeSales Spring Classic; Three Lions Finish Top 10

Three Lions finished inside the top 10 resulting in the team finishing in second out of eight teams. Hjerten, McKechan and Bailey all earned top 10 finishes.

NEW TRIPOLI, Pa. – Men's golf concluded the two-day DeSales Spring Classic on Saturday afternoon. After 36 holes the Lions finished in second place shooting a 310. Filip Hjerten, Ashton McKechan and Charles Bailey all finished inside the top 10 for Albright.

RESULTS

The two-day tournament was played at Olde Homestead Golf Club. The Lions and the rest of the field battled frigid temperatures throughout the day on Saturday.

Scranton won the team title with team score of 612. Albright took second with a team score of 621 and was followed by Arcadia who took third with a team score of 637. A total of eight teams and 44 individuals teed it up over the past two days.

Of the five total Middle Atlantic Conference teams in the field, including Albright, the Lions bested each won having a better team score than Arcadia, DeSales, Lebanon Valley, Misericordia and DeSales B team. The Lions sent their B team to competition this weekend and beat all the aforementioned institutions A teams.

The Lions shot a 311 yesterday to put them in position today looking to track down Scranton.

Hjerten had his best game working all tournament long. Hjerten shot a 73 yesterday and a 74 today to secure the top five finish, finishing solo second. After a triple bogey on the first hole of the day, Hjerten settled down. Over the next 17 holes, Hjerten played them at one under par with birdies on holes four, eight and 16.

The par fives were kind to Hjerten during the competition playing the eight total par fives at one under par.

Bailey was able to shave off three strokes from yesterday's round to today. A round of 77 was highlighted by three total birdies with back-to-back birdies on holes 11 and 12. Bailey finished in T8 after 36 holes.

McKechan shot the same score today as he did yesterday, finishing today with a 78. McKechan found two birdies in total over the 18 holes. On the back nine, McKechan played the nine holes at even par to propel him to a T6 finish.

Oliver Liljeblad started his round well playing the front nine at just one over par. Birdies on holes one and eight. Liljeblad ended his round with an 81 to finish in 14th place.

Sam Elsen rounded out the day of Lions in action shooting an 87.

The Lions will head to White Manor Country Club in Malvern, Pa. to compete in the Swarthmore Invitational. Round one will be played tomorrow, March 29. Monday, March 30 will see the teams in the field play 36 total holes resulting in 54 total holes of competition.
