Men's Soccer Buries Gophers, 2-1

Box Score

READING, Pa. - It was a high adrenaline night at Shirk Stadium as the Lions (3-4-2) managed to pull out a huge win over the Gophers of Goucher College (5-3) by the final score of 2-1 Wednesday evening.

Leading the red and white to the huge victory were #Adam Toroniewski# and #David Folino#. Both scores by the forwards were unassisted and came at crucial moments in the contest. Goucher initially broke the scoreless draw in the 12th minute of the match.

However their lead did not last as Toroniewski evened the score at 1-1 one a sensational play. After finding space on the far side of the goal, Toroniewski used his speed to get around a Gopher defender. With just a split second of open space, Toroniewski crushed the ball from about 28 yards out, driving it to the far corner to tie the game up at 1-1.

His goal not only revitalized his teammates but it also brought the fans back into the game in a loud way. Albright did manage to lead the half in shots taken with six, while Goucher total four of their own. The Gophers also produced the only corner kick in the first 45 minutes of play.

Even at 1-1 going into the halftime break, the Lions knew that this was their game to win. The game winning goal did not come early and it did not come easily, as the red and white had to prove how tough they really were against a very quick and skilled opponent. Albright's defense led by freshmen #Ryan Barr# and #Drew Williams#, sophomore #Chris Tadley#, and junior #Matt Pannella# played a great game in the back field.

Their efforts held the Gophers scoreless throughout the second half, and limited them to just four more shots. The defense also made Goucher's seven corner kicks useless as they consistently cleared the ball out of the box before anything could happen.

With the thought of overtime starting to run through peoples minds, Albright exploded on a brilliant unassisted goal by Folino.

Folino who has showcased his foot work time-and-time again managed to find some open space right in front of the Gophers goal box. With the ball bouncing in front of him, Folino timed his shot perfectly and just unloaded on the ball.

Before anyone knew what happened the net was pushed backwards and the scoreboard read 2-1 in favor of the Lions. Despite surrendering the two scores Goucher goalkeeper Justin Holbrook played a strong game for his team recording two saves on the night.

Overall the Lions totaled 13 shots and four corner kicks all of which were earned in the second half. Sophomore forward #Mark Yost# led the game with four shots, two of which were on goal.

Men's Soccer returns to action on Saturday when they host Frostburg State University in a 2 p.m. non-conference match at Shirk Stadium.
