The Albright College softball team (0-2) fell to Hamilton College (1-0) and Ohio Wesleyan (3-1) as part of their first day of games in the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic in Florida.
In the team's season opener against Hamilton, the Lions pounded out 12 hits to 11 for the Continentals. However, Albright was only able to muster one run as they left 12 runners on base.
Albright crossed the plate first in the bottom of the third.
Kiersten Gilfoy reached on an error and was brought home after senior
Becky Crandall also reached on a Hamilton miscue. The Lions had a chance to add to the lead, but Crandall was thrown out at home to end the inning after
Stephanie Romano flied out to centerfield.
The Lions had golden opportunities in the second and fourth to create a bigger advantage. However, in both frames, Albright grounded out with the bases loaded and two outs.
Hamilton got on the board in the top of the fifth as the Continentals struck for four runs on six hits.
Sam Miller provided the clutch hit of the inning with a double that brought in two and gave Hamilton a 2-1 lead.
The Continentals expanded on their 4-1 lead with two runs apiece in their final two at-bats in the sixth and seventh.
Brandy Lagomarsino and
Miriah Wilson each had three hits in the season opener. Gilfoy went 2-for-3 with a walk and
Natalie Carlucci added two more hits, including a double.
Romano was handed the loss for Albright in game one. She pitched five innings and allowed seven hits and three earned runs while striking out four. She was relieved by
Alex Tragno to start the sixth.
Hamilton's
Chelsea Merritt earned the victory for the Continentals with a complete-game effort. She struck out four and walked two. Offensively, Merritt went 2-for-3 with two runs scored.
In game two, Albright fell to Ohio Wesleyan 9-5. The Lions managed just four hits as Wesleyan's
Amanda Barker went four innings and earned the victory.
Lagamarsino continued her hot hitting from the leadoff spot as she went 2-for-3 with an RBI and run scored. Gilfoy went 2-for-3 to finish the day 4-for-6 at the plate. Wilson added an RBI and run scored.
Albright's
Allie Frank took the loss in game two. Romano and
Melissa Alimonti threw the final four innings and allowed just one earned run.
Softball will return to action tomorrow with games against Richard Stockton and Wooster in Fort Myers.
