A close play at the plate gave Widener a 10-inning victory and a sweep as the Albright College softball team dropped a doubleheader, 6-2 and 6-5 at Angelica Park on Sunday.
In the bottom of the 10th with one out,
Miriah Wilson put the ball in play and
Alysa Romero attempted to score from third. She slid under the tag as Widener catcher
Shelby Mackintosh dove forward and tagged her on the chest. The incredibly close call went against the Lions, and one out later they were going home empty-handed after their first conference games of the season.
In the top half of the stanza,
Jen Nance singled in
Valarie Perretti to help Widener break a 5-5 deadlock.
Brandy Lagomarsino was 5-for-10 with three RBIs across both games, and went 2-for-6 with two RBIs and a run scored in the nightcap.
Jackie Bohanan was 2-for-4 and knocked home a pair, while
Becky Crandall (2-3) also contributed at the plate.
Melissa Alimonti was unlucky to take the loss as she pitched 5.1 innings of relief and allowed just one run- due only to the rule that places a runner at second to start each inning once a game reaches the 10th.
Mackintosh went 2-for-4 with an RBI for the Pride, while
Casey Hargadon was 2-or-5 with a run scored and two batted in.
Christine Mattis had a huge game, going 2-for-4 with an RBI and lasting nine innings on the mound to grab the win decision.
With the score tied 1-1 in the fourth,
Hillary Rodriguez was also called out at home. Albright rallied for three runs however, with Lagomarsino knocking in
Shannon Stevens and Romero, and Bohanan bringing home Wilson.
Widener plated four runs in the top of the fifth, but the Lions rallied to force extra innings thanks to Bohanan doubling in Lagomarsino in the sixth.
Lagomarsino was 3-for-4 with an RBI in game one; Romero went 1-for-2 with a run scored.
Jackie Korang (who had a save in the second contest) went the distance to earn the win. Mackintosh (3-4, 3 RBIs, run),
Carissa Harris (2-3, run) and
Colleen Orsborn (2-3, RBI) all came up big at the plate for the Pride.
Mackintosh's three-RBI double had given the visitors a 3-0 lead before Crandall scored in the bottom of the first. Widener would tack on two more in the third inning.
Albright falls to 2-6, 0-2 and will travel to Lycoming on Saturday for another Commonwealth doubleheader. Widener is 8-4, 2-0.
